What counts as a good average view duration

Average view duration is the number most creators check first and the number most likely to mislead them. Four minutes is excellent on a six-minute video and poor on a forty-minute one. The two numbers, and why they get confused

YouTube reports two things that sound similar and answer different questions:

A twenty-minute video with an AVD of six minutes has an APV of thirty per cent. Both describe the same viewing; they just divide it differently. AVD is the one that drives watch time and therefore the one the algorithm cares about most directly, but APV is the one that tells you whether your video held people for its length. Why length changes the answer completely

Longer videos almost always have a lower percentage viewed and a higher absolute duration. That is not a judgement about quality — it is arithmetic plus attention. Every additional minute is another minute during which something can interrupt a viewer, and the pool of people willing to commit half an hour is smaller than the pool willing to commit five minutes.

This produces a trap. A creator sees their percentage fall after moving to longer videos and concludes the longer format is failing, when total watch time may have risen substantially. The reverse trap is just as common: chasing a high percentage by making videos shorter than the subject deserves, and losing watch time in exchange for a prettier number.

Where relative retention comes in

Format matters as much as length

A tutorial where someone leaves the moment their problem is solved is behaving correctly, and a modest AVD there is not a failure. A story-driven video with the same AVD has lost people mid-story, which is a different thing entirely. Compilations, podcasts, gameplay and explainers all sit in genuinely different places, and comparing across them produces nonsense.

The practical consequence: your own back catalogue is a better benchmark than any published figure. You know the format, you know the lengths, and the comparison controls for the things that make cross-channel numbers meaningless.

What to do when AVD is lower than you want

Look at the curve rather than the average, because the average is a summary of a shape and the shape is where the fix is. A single cliff at a specific timestamp points at one moment. A long sag points at a section that stopped earning its place. A steep fall that never flattens points at an opening that runs too long before the content starts.

The most common cause of a disappointing AVD is not a dramatic failure anywhere.
