AVD meaning in one line

The full form of AVD is average view duration. You will also see it written "AVD YT" or just "AVD" in creator chats and analytics tools. It is one of the two core retention numbers in YouTube Studio, and the one that tells you how long people actually stay.

AVD vs AVP

The two always connect. A 10-minute video with an AVD of 4:30 has an AVP of 45%. A 20-minute video with the same 4:30 AVD has an AVP of about 22%, which says something very different about how well it held people. Our guide to AVD vs APV covers when to use which.

How AVD is calculated

AVD is total watch time divided by total views. If a video has been watched 1,000 times for a combined 4,500 minutes, the AVD is 4:30. Every view counts, so a viewer who stays for the whole video and one who leaves at 0:20 both feed the average. A few early leavers can drag AVD down even when the people who stay love the video.

To work it out yourself from Studio's figures, divide watch time (hours) by views, then multiply by 3,600 to get seconds. The third tab in the calculator does exactly that. Watch time and views must cover the same date range, or the answer will be wrong.

How to read your result

Where to find AVD in YouTube Studio

  1. For the channel, open YouTube Studio, then Analytics, then Engagement. Average view duration and average percentage viewed sit near the top, for the date range you choose.
  2. For one video, open Content, click the video, then Analytics. The same numbers appear beside the audience retention graph.
  3. Hover along the retention graph to see how many viewers are still watching at each timestamp. That graph is what AVD summarises.

Raise it or judge it

This page owns the meaning and the arithmetic. The next two questions have their own pages: what is a good average view duration for judging your number, and how to increase AVD for changing it. If you are weighing it against the percentage side, what is a good retention rate covers that.
