How to check YouTube retention — and read what the curve is telling you
People search for a "retention checker" wanting one of two very different things: the curve for a video they own, or the curve for a video they do not. One is free and takes about fifteen seconds. The other is not possible, and it is worth knowing why before you pay anyone who claims otherwise.

Checking retention on your own video (free, 15 seconds)
YouTube gives every creator the full audience-retention curve for their own videos. No third-party tool is needed to see it:
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Content.
- Click the video you want to check.
- Open the Analytics tab, then Engagement.
- Scroll to Audience retention.
That graph is the source of truth. Every retention tool in existence — including ours — works from this data or from the transcript alongside it. Anything that contradicts it is wrong.
On mobile, the YouTube Studio app shows the same curve under a video's analytics, though the interactive scrubbing is easier on desktop.
What you cannot check: someone else's retention
Audience retention is private analytics data. It is visible only to the channel that owns the video, through their authenticated account. There is no public API for it, no scraping route, and no legitimate tool that can show you a competitor's real retention curve.
This matters because the phrase "retention checker" attracts products that imply otherwise. If a tool claims to show you another channel's retention, it is doing one of three things: estimating from public signals like view counts and video length, showing you a made-up curve, or quietly showing you engagement metrics that are not retention at all. None of those are the graph.
The four things worth reading on your own curve
1. The opening cliff
Every retention graph falls steeply at the start. That drop is normal and unavoidable — it is the cost of everyone who clicked without commitment. What matters is not that it falls, but where it stops falling. A curve that is still dropping steeply at 60 or 90 seconds is telling you the content starts too late. 2. The shape after it flattens
A healthy curve settles into a gentle, near-linear decline. Read the deviations, not the slope: a sudden cliff mid-video points at one specific moment, while a long sagging stretch points at a section that lost its reason to exist. 3. Spikes and re-watches
An upward bump means viewers scrubbed back or rewatched. That is usually a compliment — something was dense, surprising, or worth seeing twice. It can also mean something was unclear. Watch the moment before deciding which.
4. Relative retention
Studio also shows how a video held up against similar YouTube videos of comparable length. This is the single most useful number Studio gives you, because raw retention percentages are almost meaningless without a length comparison — a 45% average on a 25-minute video and a 45% average on a 4-minute video are completely different achievements.
The gap between checking and knowing
Studio tells you where viewers left. It does not tell you why, or what to change. That gap is the entire job. A drop at 4:20 could be a tangent, a promise the hook wrote that the video never cashed, a visual that stopped changing, or a payoff that arrived ninety seconds after the viewer stopped waiting for it. The curve looks identical in every case; the fix is different in every case.
Closing that gap means lining the curve up against what was actually happening in the video at each of those seconds — the words, the pacing, the edit — and working out which one caused the leave.

Why does my retention drop so sharply in the first few seconds?
Every video does this. The opening seconds are the only moment your entire click-through audience is present at once, including people who clicked with no real intent, so the steepest fall on any curve sits right at the start. The number to judge is not the size of that drop but where it stops — if the curve is still falling steeply after a minute, your content is starting too late rather than your hook being unusually bad.
What counts as good retention?
It depends almost entirely on video length, which is why a bare percentage tells you very little. A long video holding a modest percentage can be outperforming a short video holding a much higher one. Does checking retention help if my video already flopped?
Yes, more than most creators expect. The curve of a video that underperformed is the clearest diagnostic you will ever get, because the failure is localised to specific seconds rather than spread across a vague sense that it did not work.
