Every retention curve slopes downward. Some viewers leave for reasons no edit can touch: a phone call, a doorbell, autoplay moving them on. That part is normal decay. The loss you can actually fix looks different on the graph. It arrives as steps, cliffs, and sagging sections at specific timestamps, and each common cause leaves a recognisable signature.
This guide maps the six causes behind most mid-video drops to their signatures and their fixes — the leaks that, once closed, do the most to raise your average view duration. How much loss is normal
Diagnosis starts with a baseline, and the shape of a healthy curve matters more than any single number. Across Retti's corpus of real, creator-submitted retention curves — almost all from videos longer than eight minutes — the median video follows the same arc:
- The opening 30 seconds do most of the damage. By far the biggest single drop happens here, as the audience sorts itself.
- The first quarter keeps slipping fast. Retention is still falling steeply through the early part of the body.
- The middle settles down. From the quarter mark through to three-quarters, a healthy video loses only a modest amount — decay is slow and smooth.
- The ending sheds a little more. A small extra drop across the final stretch is normal as viewers leave a finished video.
Read the gaps, not the heights. The opening cliff is steep by design, but once it is over, healthy decay through the body is gentle. A 10-point step at minute six is not the audience drifting off. The six causes, and what each looks like
1. The payoff is late
The title promised something. The hook repeated the promise. At the midpoint, the viewer still does not have it. Nobody leaves at one clean timestamp over this, so the signature is not a cliff: it is a slope that starts steepening around the quarter mark and keeps steepening, as viewers lose faith one at a time.
The fix: deliver the first instalment of the promise inside the first third, even if the full answer comes later. A video promising a transformation should show early proof that the transformation is real. Hold your best material back if you want — but never hold all of it.
2. The video wanders off the promise
A tangent is any stretch the person who clicked would not recognise as part of the deal: a backstory detour, an unrelated opinion, a sponsor segue that interrupts the thought it sits inside. The signature is the cleanest of the six. The graph steps down at the timestamp where you left the thread, and it never recovers, because the viewers who left did not wait around to see whether you came back.
The fix: for every section, ask whether someone who clicked the title would call it part of the promise. If not, cut it, compress it to a sentence, or rework it so it raises the stakes of the main thread instead of pausing it.
3. Repeating a point you already made
Saying a finished point again in different words feels like emphasis from the inside and reads as padding from the outside. Viewers realise at different moments that nothing new is arriving, so the signature is a sag spread across the whole section rather than one sharp fall.
The fix: make each point once, properly, with one example. When something deserves more weight, demonstrate it from a new angle instead of restating it — emphasis should be new evidence, not the same sentence wearing different words.
4. Nothing is currently at stake
Stakes are whatever is at risk right now: money already spent, a deadline, a prediction that might be wrong, an outcome the presenter visibly cares about. The moment a video resolves its open question without raising another, watching becomes optional. The signature is decay that steepens immediately after a resolved moment — often just past the midpoint — with no single bad section to point at.
The fix: open the next question before you close the current one. After every payoff, say or show what is now at risk. If you cannot name what the viewer should be worried about in the current minute, neither can they.
5. Energy sag
A long, unbroken talking-head stretch with no visual change bleeds viewers even when the words are good. Nobody leaves at a single moment; they leak away across the whole passage. The signature is a section where the slope runs steeper than the rest of your video without any cliff in it.
The fix: change something the viewer can see or hear at the end of every beat — b-roll, a cut-in, on-screen text, a new angle or location. If you cannot spot the sag in your own edit, a frame-by-frame edit review set against the retention graph will find it.
6. The content outlived the idea
Some videos answer their promise at minute nine and keep going until minute fourteen. The signature is a final quarter that bleeds far beyond the normal closing pattern. There is a length wrinkle in the data here: the longest videos tend to open a little stronger than mid-length ones but finish a little lower. Long videos are not the problem. Long videos with too little idea are.
The fix: end when the promise is fulfilled. Move the leftovers — extra thoughts, the second idea, the outtakes — into the next video, and point your end screen at it.
